Meeting Baby Amber

| January 12, 2013

To ensure the household was no longer contagious we had to wait an excruciating eight days before we could safely see my sister Alicia and meet her beautiful baby Amber.

It’s been five years since Alicia and I were last together and in that time we’ve both been pregnant and had our beautiful daughters. There’s eight months between Imogen and Amber and it’s great having them so close in age. Plus we get to share parenting dilemmas and tips!

We couldn’t believe how well Imogen and Amber got on. From the very beginning they took a shine to one another and it wasn’t long before they were giggling and sharing toys.

Baby Cousins

Imogen and Amber meet for the first time

Imogen had been talking about ‘Baby Amber’ for a long time before our journey to New Zealand and she was so excited about meeting her cousin.

Imogen and Amber 'walking' on their knees!

One of the most amazing thing to observe between them was how they imitated one another. Amber wanted to wear shoes because Imogen was, this had proved a struggle prior to this day with her little toes curling each time my sister tried to gently slip on some shoes. And Imogen decided she’d drink a bottle of milk, something she’s never done before as she went from being breastfed to sippy cup, but seeing Amber being given a bottle by Alicia looked new and very exciting!

Riverford Dairy Competition

| March 15, 2012

We’ve sampled some of Riverford’s amazing dairy produce this week.

The selection of Riverford’s organic whole milk, semi skimmed milk and skimmed milk was delicious.

We enjoyed it fresh in the morning on our museli with a side of hot milky coffee and in the afternoon with a cup of English Breakfast tea.

At only 99p per litre Riverford organic milk is great value and healthy for the whole family.

Indulgently we consumed the Riverford clotted cream with scones and organic raspberry jam. We could have been in Devon, it was like stepping into another world…

The whole yoghurt and fat-free yoghurt tasted delicious with a fresh fruit salad and I enjoyed it as a quick and convenient snack during the day with a sprinkling of sunflower seeds. Our baby loved the creamy whole yoghurt after her dinner in the evening, full of goodness and flavour.

The Riverford clotted cream fudge was, dare I say more! Fantastic as a gift or as an indulgent treat for oneself.

Riverford butter is deliciously creamy and it stayed semi-soft in the fridge, making it wonderfully convenient for spreading straight on to fresh bread or toast. We enjoyed it on crusty fresh bread with Leek and Potato Soup and used it in cooking to bring out the full flavour of vegetables.

Riverford Dairy Competition

Until the 27 April 2012 you can enter the competition to win a day at Riverford’s dairy farm in Yorkshire or Devon. The prize includes one night’s B&B accommodation for the winner and a friend.

Riverford work with small-scale producers who care about their animals. They won the RSPCA Good Business Awards 2011. Find out more about Riverford animal welfare and don’t miss the incredible video of their cows bounding into the field at the beginning of Spring.

Development of Newborn Senses

| February 27, 2012

Early Learning Activity Toys

Your baby’s development is amazing and takes place with rapid speed, but what is your baby aware of when they’re a newborn?

SIGHT

Newborn’s can only see things close up, about 20cms away from them. So when your baby’s being held they’ll be able to see your face, which makes this close contact a great way to bond.

Contrasting colours such as black and white are great for newborns to look at. At around 2 months your baby can distinguish colours and will enjoy mobiles.

At 6 months, new faces and objects are catching your baby’s attention and at 8 months your baby’s vision will be fully developed.

TASTE

It’s no wonder babies like sweet tasting foods, milk is naturally sweet. From 3 months onwards your baby will probably try to put what they can into their mouth, and when teething starts this will heighten their desire to have a good chew on things!

HEARING

Your baby listened to your voice in utero so will recognise it when they’re born and associate this with comfort. Hearing isn’t properly developed when a baby is newborn. At around 1 month old they’ll react to loud noises. Babies learn to associate certain sounds with happy events, so it’s important to make singing and music a fun and special part of the day with your baby. Music is a wonderful way to soothe your baby and develop their hearing and sense of tone.

TOUCH

Touch is essential for babies, kisses and cuddles make your baby feel secure. Babies love to explore with their hands and when weaning, will often squash food before eating it to understand what it feels like. Toys and books with texture really encourage play and development.

SMELL

Newborns have a good sense of smell and will know your natural scent from birth. Babies find your natural scent comforting, so try not to wear any perfume or scented creams for the first few months so your baby can enjoy your natural scent. By the age of 1 your baby will be able to recognise foods by their smell.

For further baby sensory development and a great way to have fun with your baby, you can join a local Baby Sensory Class.
